文化財保護・博物館行政に尽力し、民具研究に従事した宮本馨太郎。仏製の9.5ミリカメラ、パテーベビーで現地調査を撮影し、作品化した映像民俗学者のパイオニアでもあります。 彼の作品を、いくつかのテーマに沿って取り上げます。 第2回のテーマは『民俗芸能との出会い』。各地固有の、古くから伝わる珠玉の芸能を取り上げた3作品を紹介します。 【作品解説】 『花祭をたづねて』（1930年/11分/モノクロ・サイレント/4：3） 足込花祭りの花宿が主な舞台。中在家の佐々木嘉一氏邸から始まり、花宿を熱心にのぞき込む観客の姿など祭りのにぎやかな情景が映し出され、別日に改めて撮ったであろう榊鬼の所作が克明に記録されている。最後には、宮本邸で行われた花祭りの再現の一部が収録されている。 『古念佛踊』（1931年/10分/モノクロ・サイレント/4：3） 茨城県稲敷郡高田村にて、年の初めや収穫後に豊年万作を願って踊る古念仏踊りの一連を撮影したもの。敢えて周囲にカメラを向けず、踊りの全体像をとらえる事に集中している。 『鹿児島県下硫黄島の太鼓踊』（1934年/2分/モノクロ・サイレント/4：3） 硫黄島で悪霊祓いとして行われる太鼓踊り。鉦叩きを中心に、踊り手が太鼓をたたきながら踊る。終盤には、仮面神「メンドン」が登場。会場を暴れまわり悪霊払いをする。
